In 2013, the park inaugurated a universal access trail, a 1200- meter path made of concrete, to provide an opportunity for people with disabilities to learn more about the wonders of the tropical forest.
A second trail of 2.7 miles parallel to the Laguna Meandrica awaits half a mile south of the bridge for a moderate hike. This trail is closed in the heart of the rainy season because it’s often covered by several feet of flood water.
25 km south is Playa Hermosa Punta Mala Wildlife refuge, a perfect compliment a visit in the area.
Carara National Park
Carara, indigenous Huetar word meaning "River of lizards", has the only transition forest in the Central Pacific resulting in an area with diverse flora and fauna where species of the dry and humid forests converge.
This National Park is known worldwide as a top birding destination because of its diverse birdlife. The Scarlet Macaw, a species that is in danger of extinction, is often taking the center stage. It is followed closely by capuchin monkeys, anteaters, parrots, aracaris, kingfishers and hundreds of migratory bird species.
The Río Grande de Tárcoles, flowing through the National Park, has free flowing sections and its waters seep into seasonal marshlands and a shallow oxbow lake. Overall the vegetation is more open than the rainforests further south making wildlife spotting easier.
Its strategic location between North and South America, is favorable for migratory birdwatching as they are seen frequently in these wetlands reseting from their extended flights.
When to Visit
Dry Season
December through April is the dry season. The dry season is also the high season as many snow birds make their escape to the tropics. There is less rainfall, sunsets tend to be more colorful and it is a great time to plan for destination weddings.
Wet Season
May through November is the green season. Expect sunny mornings (great for morning tours) and afternoon rain showers (perfect for a rejuvenating afternoon). There are many perks of traveling in rainy season including less crowds and active wildlife.
